Sam Mendes's 2019 war film, shot to look like a single unbroken take, following two young British soldiers given an urgent order on the Western Front in April 1917: cross the lines and the ruined country beyond to call off an attack that will walk sixteen hundred men into a trap. A gruelling, intimate journey through the landscape of the First World War. The route covers only a few miles of northern France, but every yard is mortal.

   British Trenches

   Two lance corporals, Schofield and Blake, are sent from the British front line on a desperate errand across enemy ground.

   No Mans Land

   They climb out over the parapet and pick their way through the corpses and wire of no mans land into the abandoned German trenches.

   Ecoust

   Through the bombed and burning ruins of the town of Ecoust, under fire and alone.

   The Devons Line

   To the lines of the Second Devons in the woods beyond, racing to stop the attack before it begins.
