Terms of Use
Last updated: 16/07/2026
Please read these terms before using readingmaps.com. By using the site you accept them. If you don't accept them, please don't use the site.
1. Who we are
Reading Maps (readingmaps.com) is operated by Aires Loutsaris based in the United Kingdom. You can contact us at [email protected].
2. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The version published on this page is the one that applies. If we make a significant change we'll update the date above. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the revised terms.
3. Using the site
You may browse the site and use it for your own personal, non-commercial purposes. You may share links to it freely.
You agree not to:
- copy, scrape, harvest, or systematically extract the route data, waypoints, coordinates, or written descriptions, whether by hand or by automated means, without our written permission;
- use the site's content to train, fine-tune, or evaluate machine learning models without our written permission;
- republish, sell, licence, or redistribute any substantial part of the site's content;
- interfere with the site, its security, or its availability, or attempt to gain unauthorised access to it;
- use the site in any way that is unlawful or that infringes anybody else's rights.
We may suspend or withdraw access to the site, in whole or in part, at any time and without notice.
4. Our content and who owns what
The site brings together material from several sources, and they have different owners:
- The routes, waypoints, and written descriptions are our own original work and are protected by copyright and database rights. They are our interpretation of the journeys described in published works. They are not reproductions of those works.
- Base map tiles and imagery are supplied by MapTiler and are subject to MapTiler's terms. Underlying geographic data is © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence (ODbL).
- Land and coastline data used for route checking comes from Natural Earth, which is in the public domain.
- Book metadata and cover images are sourced from Open Library and the Internet Archive, and remain the property of their respective rights holders.
- Film metadata and poster images are sourced from TMDB. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB. Posters and stills remain the property of their respective rights holders.
Titles, author names, character names, and the facts of a story's geography are referenced for the purpose of identification, commentary, and criticism. Reading Maps is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any author, publisher, studio, or estate.
If you believe something on this site infringes your rights, please use our Takedown page. We take these seriously and act on them quickly.
5. What you send us
If you submit a route suggestion, a correction, a description, or any other material ("your submission"):
- You keep ownership of it.
- You grant us a worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive licence to use, reproduce, adapt, publish, and display it on the site and in connection with promoting the site, in any media.
- You confirm that it's yours to give, that it doesn't infringe anyone else's rights, and that it isn't unlawful, defamatory, or offensive.
- We're under no obligation to use it, to credit you, or to keep it up.
- We may edit it, shorten it, or rewrite it entirely.
Please don't send us confidential information or anything you'd be upset to see published.
6. Accuracy, and what this site is not
We take the geography seriously and check it carefully, but:
- The routes are interpretations. They represent a journey described in a work of fiction, reconstructed from the text. Different readers reach different conclusions, and we sometimes get it wrong.
- Historical routes are approximations. Where a text is vague, we make a judgement.
- This is not a navigational tool. The routes are drawn for readability, not for travel. Do not use anything on this site to navigate a vessel, plan a voyage, or make any decision where accuracy matters. It is not fit for that purpose and we accept no responsibility if you try.
- The descriptions contain spoilers, by their nature.
The site is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent permitted by law, we make no warranties of any kind about it, including as to accuracy, completeness, or continuous availability.
7. Links to other sites
Where we link out to other websites, we do it for information only. We don't control them, we don't endorse them, and we're not responsible for their content.
8. Our liability to you
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited or excluded.
Subject to that, and to the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable to you for:
- any loss of profit, business, contracts, revenue, goodwill, anticipated savings, or data;
- any indirect or consequential loss;
- any loss or damage arising from your use of, or inability to use, the site, or from reliance on any content on it.
If you use the site for any commercial purpose, we have no liability to you for business losses.
Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
9. Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. Any dispute will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
