J.C. Chandor's 2013 film. Alone on his yacht deep in the Indian Ocean, a solitary sailor wakes to find his hull holed by a drifting shipping container. As storms shred the crippled boat and then his life raft, the nameless man fights the sea with sextant and dwindling water, drifting toward the distant shipping lanes in a wordless struggle simply to stay alive.
- 1The collision
Sailing alone across the vast emptiness of the Indian Ocean, a man wakes to a jolt: his yacht has struck a half-sunken shipping container, and seawater is pouring into the hull far from any shore or help.
- 2The storm
He patches the hole and fights on, only for a savage storm to roll and dismast the boat and finally sink her, forcing him into a life raft with a sextant, a few tins, and the current for a guide.
- 3The shipping lanes
Drifting on the current toward the distant shipping lanes, burned by sun and out of water, the man makes one last desperate bid for the eye of a passing ship - his whole survival narrowed to a single flickering light.
