Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

John Moore · 2001 · survival

John Moore's 2001 war thriller, loosely drawn from a real 1995 shoot-down. Flying a reconnaissance run over Bosnia, navigator Chris Burnett photographs a mass grave he was never meant to see and is blasted out of the sky. Alone behind Serb lines, hunted across the winter countryside by a relentless tracker, he runs from crash site to extraction point while his admiral fights to launch a rescue.

  1. 1
    The crash site

Shot down over the demilitarized zone after photographing what he shouldn't, Lieutenant Burnett ejects into hostile Bosnian hills, his navigator killed, a Serb tracker already reading his trail in the snow.

  2. 2
    The mass grave

Fleeing the patrol, Burnett tumbles into the mass grave his cameras had caught - proof of a massacre - and hides among the dead until the soldiers pass, the evidence now the reason he must not be taken alive.

  3. 3
    Hac

Bosniak fighters give him a lift toward Hac, a supposed safe haven that turns out to be an active battlefield; in the chaos he swaps clothes with a dead soldier and slips away, presumed killed.

  4. 4
    The extraction point

With his rescue called off and reinstated by a leaked news story, Burnett crosses a minefield to the final pickup zone, where his admiral's renegade helicopters at last come in low to lift him out.
