Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Paul Greengrass · 2013 · sea

Paul Greengrass's 2013 thriller, from the real 2009 hijacking. Captain Richard Phillips takes the container ship Maersk Alabama out of Salalah, Oman, bound around the Horn of Africa for Kenya - straight through pirate waters. When four armed Somalis board far out in the Indian Ocean, Phillips trades himself for his crew, and a drifting lifeboat becomes the stage for a days-long standoff with the U.S. Navy.

    Off Eyl

The lifeboat drifts toward the Somali shore with Phillips captive inside, shadowed by the destroyer USS Bainbridge - a days-long siege that ends in a single coordinated volley from Navy SEAL snipers.
