Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Peter Faiman · 1986 · road

Peter Faiman's 1986 comedy. A New York reporter flies to the Northern Territory to interview a bushman who supposedly crawled half of Arnhem Land with his leg chewed off, finds the story is about two thirds true, and takes him back to Manhattan - where the joke reverses and the city becomes the wilderness nobody can survive without a guide.

  1. 1
    Walkabout Creek

Sue Charlton arrives at a Territory pub to interview Mick Dundee, a crocodile hunter with an embroidered legend and genuine competence, and hires him to take her out into the country he works.

  2. 2
    Kakadu

Out in the wetlands and escarpments of Kakadu, the interview turns into a demonstration - crocodiles, buffalo, bush tucker and a night sky - and the reporter revises her opinion of both the man and the country.

  3. 3
    New York

She brings him back to Manhattan, where every skill he has is useless and every joke lands the other way round - and the film's real subject, how much of a person is made by their place, arrives on a subway platform.
