Anne Frank · 1947 · exile
Anne Frank's diary, kept in hiding and published after her death. Born in Frankfurt, Anne was a small child when her Jewish family fled Nazi Germany for Amsterdam. When the occupation closed in, the Franks hid for two years in a concealed annex, where the teenage Anne wrote - until betrayal and arrest sent them east, through Westerbork and Auschwitz to Bergen-Belsen, where Anne died.

In Amsterdam the Franks find a few safe years, until the German occupation and its deportations force them into hiding in a secret annex behind Otto's business - where, for two years, thirteen-year-old Anne keeps her diary.

In August 1944 the hidden are betrayed and arrested; the family is sent first to Westerbork, the transit camp in the Dutch northeast where Jews were gathered before the trains east.

On one of the last transports the family is carried to Auschwitz in occupied Poland, and there separated - the last time Anne and her mother would see her father, who alone would survive the war.
- 5Bergen-Belsen
Anne and her sister Margot are moved on to Bergen-Belsen in Germany, where both die of typhus in early 1945, only weeks before the camp is liberated. Otto later published his daughter's diary.
