Bram Stoker · 1897 · overland

Bram Stoker's 1897 novel. Jonathan Harker travels east from London to the Borgo Pass to close a property sale for a client who casts no shadow. The Count then follows him back, by sea to Whitby with fifty boxes of his own earth - and when he is finally driven out of England, the hunt goes the whole way to Transylvania again.

   Peter Hawkins' practice under the shadow of the cathedral, chosen by the Count precisely because it is far from London - and Hawkins, being gouty, sends his young clerk Jonathan Harker east with the deeds instead.

   He breaks his journey in Bavaria, already uneasy at the way people react when he says where he is going - and the westward comforts start falling away behind the train.

   Eastward by rail, and Harker notes in his diary that the further east you go the less punctual the trains become, which he means as a joke and the novel does not.

   Crossing the Danube he feels he is leaving the West altogether and entering the traditions of the East - which is the book's whole geography stated in one sentence on page three.

   In Transylvania proper, eating paprika hendl and copying down recipes for Mina, while the dread of the country people around him becomes harder to write off as superstition.

   At the Golden Krone the landlady begs him not to go and presses a crucifix on him when he insists - and the coach passengers cross themselves as he boards, and he does not know the words they use.

   The Borgo Pass

   A caleche with a driver whose eyes glow red carries him up through the night, wolves closing and parting around it - and delivers him to a castle door that opens on a man who does not eat or drink.

   Dracula ships fifty boxes of his native earth out of the Black Sea aboard the Russian schooner Demeter, bound for England - while Harker is left behind in the castle with three women and no way down.

   Whitby

   The Demeter runs aground below East Cliff in a storm with her captain lashed dead to the wheel and no crew at all, and a great dog leaps ashore and vanishes - and Lucy begins to sleepwalk to the churchyard.

    Purfleet

    He moves into Carfax, the ruined estate next to Seward's asylum, and works from there - and the second half of the book is Van Helsing sterilising the fifty boxes one at a time to leave him nowhere to sleep.

    Piccadilly, Hillingham and the asylum: Lucy's death and what has to be done afterwards, Mina bitten and marked at her own window, and the Count finally driven out of a country with no earth left to lie in.

    The hunters take the Orient Express to the Black Sea to meet his ship, and wait - and learn he has changed the destination and is already past them, which forces the party to split up and go overland.

    The box is landed at the Danube port and put on a boat upriver. Mina, half in the Count's mind, is hypnotised each dawn and describes lapping water and darkness, and they navigate by what she can hear.

    Bistritz

    The chase closes on foot, by river launch and on horseback into the mountains, in snow - Van Helsing and Mina going ahead to the castle, and the others racing the cart carrying the box.

    The Borgo Pass

    They catch the cart at sunset within sight of the castle, cut the lid off, and Harker's knife goes through the throat as Morris's goes into the heart - and the thing crumbles to dust as the sun goes down.
