Paris, and a war they mean to prevent. Claire and Jamie set out to strangle the Jacobite rising in its cradle - at the court of Louis XV, in the wine trade, among the exiles around Charles Stuart - and fail. The rising comes anyway, and carries them from the victory at Prestonpans to the ruin of the clans on Culloden Moor, and to a parting at the stones.
- 1Paris
Jared Fraser's house in the Rue Tremoulins, and the court of Louis XV. Claire befriends the apothecary Master Raymond and makes an enemy of the Comte St Germain, while the two of them work to cut off Charles Stuart's money and stop a rebellion before it can begin.
- 2Le Havre
The Channel coast. Charles Stuart has landed in Scotland and raised his standard without them, and whatever they did in Paris was not enough. Jamie and Claire take ship for home.
- 3Lallybroch
Home, and briefly quiet. Then the summons: Jared has pledged Jamie's loyalty to the Stuarts. Jamie raises the men of Lallybroch and marches, knowing from his own wife exactly how it ends.
- 4Prestonpans
September 1745. The Highland charge breaks Cope's line in a quarter of an hour and the Jacobites have Scotland. Claire works among the wounded; Jamie captures a sixteen-year-old English boy called William Grey and declines to shoot him, which will matter more than anything else he does in this war.
- 5Edinburgh
Holyrood, and the Prince's court in the city he has taken. Months of counsel Charles will not hear, while the rising quietly eats itself.
- 6Stirling
The siege, and the beginning of the end. Charles sends Jamie north to bring in the Frasers.
- 7Beauly
The Fox's Lair. Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat - Jamie's grandfather, who backs both sides at once and will hang for it.
- 8Falkirk
January 1746. A victory in the dark that settles nothing, and Rupert dies under Claire's hands because there is no light to work by.
- 9Culloden
16 April 1746. Claire has known this date her entire adult life. The clans are broken on the moor in under an hour and everything the Highlands were ends here. This is the ground the whole book has been walking toward.
- 10Craigh na Dun
On the eve of the battle Jamie takes her to the stones - three miles from the field he means to die on - and makes her go through, because she is carrying his child and that much he can still save.
- 11Inverness
She comes out in 1948 and Frank takes her home. Twenty years later, widowed, she comes back to Inverness with the daughter Jamie never saw, and finds in an old muster roll that he did not die at Culloden after all.
