The New World. Jamie and Claire come ashore with nothing and go looking for somewhere to put down roots, and find it in the North Carolina mountains. Two hundred years away, Brianna reads a newspaper notice of her parents' deaths in a fire and goes through the stones after them - and Roger goes after her.
- 1Charleston
Ashore in the colonies, penniless but for a handful of gemstones, and already entangled with Stephen Bonnet - a condemned man Jamie helps to escape out of pity, and will regret for the rest of the saga.
- 2Wilmington
North to Wilmington and dinner with Governor Tryon, who offers Jamie a land grant in the mountains: thousands of acres for nothing, on terms that would make him the Crown's man in a colony about to revolt.
- 3River Run
Up the Cape Fear to Cross Creek and River Run, the plantation of Jamie's aunt Jocasta - and on the river Bonnet finds them again and takes the gems and Claire's wedding ring.
- 4Fraser's Ridge
High in the western mountains they take the grant and build one cabin, and then a settlement: Fraser's Ridge, filling with Highland emigrants who lost at Culloden and came here instead.
- 5Boston
1969. Brianna finds a Wilmington newspaper notice: her mother and father died in a fire at Fraser's Ridge. She tells nobody and books a flight.
- 6Inverness
Where her mother went through, and where Roger realises she has gone after them alone.
- 7Craigh na Dun
The stones take her back to 1769 and set her down in Scotland, with an ocean still between her and her parents.
- 8Wilmington
She crosses to the colonies and lands at Wilmington, and the man who offers her passage upriver is Stephen Bonnet. Roger, following her, is beaten and sold to the Iroquois for a crime he did not commit.
- 9Fraser's Ridge
Brianna meets her father for the first time at twenty-three - and the fire in the newspaper has not happened yet.
- 10The Mohawk Village
North into Iroquois country to buy Roger back, five hundred miles from the Ridge, with a family being made and unmade along the way.
- 11Fraser's Ridge
Home, all of them, and four generations under one roof in a country that has not been born yet.
