J.K. Rowling's first novel, and the train journey it made famous. Collected from the Dursleys in Surrey, Harry crosses London to platform nine and three-quarters at King's Cross, and the Hogwarts Express carries him north over the Glenfinnan Viaduct and into the Scottish Highlands to the castle by the loch.

   Harry leaves the Dursleys' house on Privet Drive, bound for a school he has only just learned exists.

   At King's Cross he runs at the barrier between platforms nine and ten and boards the scarlet Hogwarts Express.

   The train sweeps north over the great curved viaduct above the glen, deep into the Highlands.

   At Hogsmeade the first-years cross the dark loch by boat to the castle of Hogwarts.
