Heidi, a Swiss orphan, is left with her grandfather on a high alp above Maienfeld and blossoms among the goats and mountain pastures, until she is carried off to the city of Frankfurt as a companion to the invalid Clara. Homesick almost to death, she is sent back to the Alps, whose air works its healing on her and, in time, on Clara too. A there-and-back between mountain and city that became one of the best-loved books in the world.

   Maienfeld

   Orphaned Heidi is brought up the mountain to live with her gruff grandfather, the Alm-Uncle, above the village of Dorfli, and falls in love with the high pastures and Peter the goatherd.

   Frankfurt

   She is carried off to Frankfurt to be a companion to the sickly, wealthy Clara Sesemann, but in the grey city she sickens with homesickness and walks in her sleep.

   Maienfeld

   Sent home to the mountains, she is made whole again, and when Clara comes to visit, the alpine air teaches her to walk.
