Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Joe Johnston · 2004 · overland

Joe Johnston's 2004 adventure, loosely from Frank Hopkins's tall tales. A washed-up American cowboy and his mustang Hidalgo are invited to Arabia to run the Ocean of Fire, a punishing three-thousand-mile survival race across the desert from Aden to Damascus. Against Bedouin thoroughbreds, sandstorms, sabotage and raiders, the long-shot pair ride for the finish and their own redemption.

  1. 1
    Aden

The Syrian city at the race's end, where the exhausted, unlikely pair of cowboy and mustang ride for the finish line and the redemption that has driven them across a continent of sand.
