Henryk Sienkiewicz's adventure of two children carried across Africa during the Mahdist war. Stas, a Polish boy, and little Nel, an English girl, are kidnapped from their fathers on the Suez Canal and dragged south to the Mahdi's Sudan; escaping at Fashoda, they cross desert and wilderness on foot, surviving every peril of the continent, until they reach the Indian Ocean at Mombasa.

   Port Said

   Stas and Nel live with their engineer fathers at the head of the Suez Canal.

   Medinet el-Fayum

   On a Christmas holiday by Lake Karun the two children are lured away and kidnapped.

   Khartoum

   Carried south by camel across the desert, they are brought before the Mahdi in conquered Khartoum.

   Fashoda

   Sent on toward deadly Fashoda, Stas kills his captor and escapes into the wild with Nel, Kali, and Mea.

   The Wilderness

   The long trek across the African wilderness begins, through ravine and jungle, fever and famine and wild beasts.

   Kali's Land

   Reaching the lake country of the interior, Stas restores Kali to his people and turns toward the coast.

   After hundreds of miles the children are found and saved, reunited with their fathers at the ocean.
