Jules Verne's voyage around the 37th parallel. A bottle pulled from a shark gives the latitude of Captain Grant's shipwreck but not the longitude, so Lord Glenarvan sails the yacht Duncan along that single line of latitude around the world, searching South America, Australia, and New Zealand in turn, before the castaways are found on a speck of an island in the empty Pacific.

   A message found in a shark gives only the latitude of Captain Grant's wreck, and the yacht Duncan sails to find him.

   The Duncan rounds Cape Horn from the Atlantic into the Pacific to reach the coast of Chile.

   Landing at the 37th parallel, the searchers set off overland to follow that line across the continent.

   Crossing the Andes and the pampas, they reach the Atlantic having found no trace of Grant.

   The same parallel carries them to the south coast of Australia, where the convict Ayrton joins them.

   Betrayed and led astray across Victoria, they reach the east coast no nearer to the captain.

   On the North Island of New Zealand they fall into the hands of the Maori and barely escape with their lives.
