Antonio Pigafetta's eyewitness chronicle of the first voyage around the world, 1519 to 1522. Ferdinand Magellan set out from Spain with five ships to reach the Spice Islands by sailing west, discovering the strait at the foot of South America that now bears his name and naming the Pacific for its calm. Magellan himself was killed in the Philippines; of the original crew of some two hundred and seventy, just eighteen returned aboard a single ship, the first ever to circle the globe.
