Steven Spielberg's 2005 film. After the killing of the Israeli team at the 1972 Olympics, a Mossad officer is given a list of eleven names and a squad with no official existence. The work takes them across Europe and the Middle East, and the further down the list they get, the less any of them can say what it is achieving.
- 1Munich
At the 1972 Olympics, Black September take the Israeli team hostage in the athletes' village, and the botched rescue at the airfield leaves eleven dead - the event the whole film keeps returning to and re-cutting as it goes.
- 2Rome
The first name on the list is a translator in Rome, shot in his own lobby carrying groceries - close range, eleven bullets, and a team discovering that none of them has done anything remotely like this before.
- 3Paris
In Paris the method changes to explosives, and a bomb in a telephone is calibrated so as not to kill the target's daughter - the first of the technical problems that will keep turning into moral ones.
- 4Nicosia
In Nicosia the charge under a hotel mattress is far larger than ordered, and blows through the wall into Avner's own room - and the team begins to wonder about the French informant who supplies both the names and the explosives.
- 5Beirut
Three names are in Beirut at once, and the operation becomes a full military raid on a seafront apartment block, carried out with Israeli commandos and a good deal of noise - the high-water mark of the whole campaign.
- 6Athens
In Athens a bomb in a television fails and has to be finished by hand, and the safe house turns out to be shared with PLO men - a night of pretending to be other people that leaves the distinctions harder to hold.
- 7New York
With his own team being killed off and no way of knowing by whom, Avner moves his family to Brooklyn - and cannot be persuaded, by his handler or anyone else, that any of it made Israel safer.
