Three escaped convicts make their episodic way across the state in search of hidden loot, meeting sirens, a cyclops, and a blind prophet along the way, while one of them only wants to get home before his wife marries another man. The geography is loose and mythic, an Odyssey drawn across the Deep South.

   Chained at the ankle, three convicts, Everett, Pete, and Delmar, flee a Mississippi work gang in pursuit of buried treasure.

   Across Depression-era Mississippi they wander through one tall tale after another: a river baptism, sirens at the water, a one-eyed bible salesman, a radio hit recorded by accident.

   Everett's Home

   A great flood washes over the valley as Everett races home to stop his wife from remarrying, an Odyssey ending at his own front door.
