Sergio Leone · 1968 · overland
Sergio Leone's 1968 western. A railroad is being pushed across the territory, and the one patch of water on the line belongs to an Irish settler who is shot with his children before his new wife arrives. What follows is four people circling that piece of ground - a widow, a bandit, a hired gun and a harmonica player who has been waiting a very long time.
- 1Flagstone
Jill McBain steps off the train at Flagstone expecting a husband and a homestead, and finds nobody to meet her - because her family were shot in their yard that morning by men wearing another gang's dusters.
- 2Sweetwater
Sweetwater is a patch of scrub with water under it, worthless to everyone except a railroad that must have a station somewhere on this stretch - which is why Brett McBain bought it, and why he and his children are dead.
- 3The railhead
At the end of the track, the dying railroad man Morton and the gunman Frank work out which of them owns the other - while Harmonica, who has been waiting since he was a boy for one particular face, closes the distance.
