A week after her mother's death, Katy takes the trip to the Amalfi Coast she was meant to share with her, and in the town of Positano she impossibly meets Carol again, thirty years old and years before Katy was born, coming to know the woman her mother was before she was ever a mother.

   At the cliffside Hotel Poseidon on the Amalfi Coast, the town her mother loved, Katy meets a sun-tanned, carefree thirty-year-old woman she slowly realises is Carol herself, young and unmarried.

   On a boat day with the American Adam she swims the blue water and stands before the towering Faraglioni rocks, letting herself feel alive again.

   A trip to the chaotic, vivid city is a world away from serene Positano, and over shared grief Adam and Katy each open up about the people they have lost.

   Back in Positano for her final days, Katy spends her remaining time with the young Carol, learning who her mother was before her, and finding a way to carry her forward.
