Norman Jewison · 1994 · road
Norman Jewison's 1994 romance. A Ouija board tells a girl of eleven that she will marry a man called Damon Bradley, and seventeen years later, eleven days before her wedding to somebody else, a man of that name telephones from the airport on his way to Italy. She goes after him - and spends the film one hotel behind.
- 1Pittsburgh
A Ouija board at eleven and a fortune teller at fourteen both give Faith Corvatch the same name - and eleven days before she marries a podiatrist, a man rings the house and says he is Damon Bradley, calling from the airport.
- 2Venice
She and her sister-in-law Kate fly to Italy on the strength of a phone call, reach the Hotel Danieli and find that Damon Bradley checked out that morning - which is how the whole film works, always one hotel behind.
- 3San Gimignano
A stopover in the Tuscan hill town of towers on the way south, and the first time Faith wonders whether she is chasing a man or an idea she has had since she was eleven.
- 4Rome
The Hassler, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi fountain, and Damon Bradley is not there either - but a shoe salesman called Peter Wright is, and he answers to the name when he hears her ask for it.
- 5Positano
The Amalfi coast, where the impostor is unmasked and the real Damon Bradley finally turns up - and Faith discovers that being right about a prophecy is not the same as wanting what it promised.
- 6Rome
Fiumicino, and Faith at the gate for the flight home to Pittsburgh - which is where the film chooses to end, in the one place in Italy designed for leaving.
