Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Kevin Costner · 2003 · overland

Kevin Costner's 2003 western. Four men free-graze cattle across country that is steadily being fenced, and ride into a town whose big rancher has already decided that free-grazers are vermin. One of them is beaten and one is killed, and the two who remain do not leave - because the alternative is to keep moving forever.

  1. 1
    The Montana plains

Boss Spearman and Charley Waite run cattle across open country in the last years it is possible, sleeping under the wagon and moving on grass that belongs to nobody - a way of life that is being fenced off a section at a time.

  2. 2
    Harmonville

In town for supplies they run into a rancher who owns the marshal and does not tolerate free-grazers, and after a killing they stay to settle it - a long, awkward, entirely unromantic gunfight in the mud of the main street.
