Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Paul King · 2014 · exile

Paul King's 2014 film of the Michael Bond books. After an earthquake destroys his home in the Peruvian rainforest, a young bear stows away in a lifeboat and arrives at Paddington Station with a suitcase, a hat and a label asking someone to look after him. London is not immediately obliging, and a taxidermist at the Natural History Museum has plans of her own.

  1. 1
    Darkest Peru

In the Peruvian rainforest, a young bear is raised by an aunt and uncle who learned English from a passing explorer and never stopped believing in London - and when an earthquake destroys the home, his aunt puts him on a ship.

  2. 2
    Paddington Station

He arrives at Paddington Station with a label round his neck asking someone to please look after this bear, and discovers that nobody in a London railway terminus is inclined to - until the Brown family stops.

  3. 3
    Primrose Hill

Installed in the Browns' house on a crescent near Primrose Hill, he floods the bathroom, rides a skateboard through the neighbours and generally establishes that the family's careful equilibrium was never worth preserving.

  4. 4
    The Natural History Museum

The taxidermist at the Natural History Museum, whose father was the explorer who found the bears, wants him for a display case - and the chase through the galleries and along the roof settles what he is and where he lives.
