Andy Weir's 2021 novel. An alien microbe is eating the sun and Earth has about thirty years. Ryland Grace, a junior high science teacher, is conscripted into the last-chance mission and wakes up light years from home with no memory and two dead crewmates. Only the first act happens on Earth; the rest is at Tau Ceti, which no map of this world can show.

   Grace is teaching junior high science, having been driven out of research years earlier for a paper nobody would publish, when Eva Stratt walks into his classroom - and does not so much recruit him as inform him.

   Baikonur

   He spends the last days before launch in a trailer by the cosmodrome. An explosion kills DuBois and Shapiro, Stratt tells him he is going whether he agrees or not, and he ends up in a cell there before they put him aboard.
