Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Julia Brannan · 2017 · survival

Julia Brannan's fifth Jacobite Chronicles novel. The retreat north ends at Culloden in under an hour, and what follows is not a campaign but a hunt. The prince is moved from island to island by men who will not give him up for thirty thousand pounds, while Cumberland's regiments burn out the glens and the MacGregors scatter to survive.

  1. 1
    Falkirk

The retreat from Derby ends in one last victory at Falkirk in January 1746, fought in driving rain and won by a charge - a success that changes nothing, because the army is already going north and running out of everything.

  2. 2
    Culloden

On Drumossie Moor in April, hungry and outgunned after a failed night march, the clans charge across open bog into grapeshot and are destroyed in under an hour - and the killing on the field goes on long after the fighting stops.

  3. 3
    Inverness

At Inverness the Duke of Cumberland sets about ensuring the Highlands can never rise again - prisoners, executions, the burning of townships and the outlawing of the plaid, dress and weapons of a whole society.

  4. 4
    Arisaig

The prince runs west to the coast where he first landed, hunted by patrols and warships across a country where every second person could earn thirty thousand pounds by naming him, and not one of them does.

  5. 5
    Benbecula

He is passed out to the Hebrides and moved from island to island - Benbecula, South Uist, Skye - hiding in shielings and open heather until a ship can be found, while the men who sheltered him pay for it at home.
