Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Geoffrey Household · 1982 · exile

Geoffrey Household's 1982 sequel, written forty-three years later. The narrator of Rogue Male goes back to finish what he started, and the war overtakes him on the way. What follows is a private campaign conducted across occupied Europe and beyond - Sweden, Poland, the Balkans, Turkey and Africa - by a man with no organisation, no orders and no intention of stopping.

  1. 1
    Stockholm

He works back into Europe through neutral Sweden, travelling on other men's papers with the single intention of returning to the mountain retreat and, this time, pulling the trigger - and finds that the war has moved the target.

  2. 2
    Warsaw

In occupied Poland he sees what the regime is actually doing, and the sporting problem of 1939 becomes something else entirely - a private war fought without instructions, against people who would not recognise him as a combatant.

  3. 3
    Istanbul

Driven south and east through the Balkans, he reaches Turkey and the neutral ground where every intelligence service in the war is doing business - and is of interest to several of them, none of whom he can afford to trust.

  4. 4
    Cairo

The last stage carries him into Africa and the British theatre, where a man with his history is finally of use to somebody official - and the rogue is quietly brought back inside the pack he spent two books outside of.
