Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Steven Spielberg · 1998 · survival

Steven Spielberg's 1998 war film. After the landing on Omaha Beach, a Ranger captain is ordered to take seven men inland and find a single paratrooper whose three brothers have all been killed - so that his mother is not sent a fourth telegram. The squad walks into occupied Normandy hunting one man, arguing the whole way about what he is worth.

  1. 1
    Omaha Beach

In the Dog Green sector on the morning of 6 June, the ramps go down into machine-gun fire and Captain Miller's company is cut apart in the water and on the shingle before it can move a yard up the beach.

  2. 2
    Vierville-sur-Mer

Off the beach at last and into the bocage beyond Vierville, Miller is handed an order from the top: find Private James Ryan of the 101st Airborne, dropped somewhere inland, and get him out of France alive.

  3. 3
    Neuville-au-Plain

The squad works through the hedgerows and shattered villages of the Cotentin, trading men for information - a wrong Ryan, a radar station that costs them a medic, and a German prisoner nobody can agree what to do with.

  4. 4
    Ramelle

They find him at last holding a bridge at Ramelle with a handful of paratroopers, and he refuses to leave - so the men sent to bring him home stay and fight for the bridge alongside him.
