Herman and Candelaria Zapp set out from Argentina for Alaska in 2000 in a 1928 Graham-Paige with no money and no plan for getting any. They reached Fairbanks three years later, having been fed and housed by strangers for most of it - and then kept going for another two decades, with four children born in four countries.

   Buenos Aires

   January 2000, and a young Argentine couple set off for Alaska in a 1928 Graham-Paige they have restored - forty thousand dollars short, no sponsor, and a car that does fifty kilometres an hour downhill.

   Lima

   Up the spine of South America through Bolivia and Peru, sleeping in the car and being fed by strangers the whole way - which becomes the method and eventually the point of the entire enterprise.

   Mexico City

   Round the Darien Gap by boat and on north through Central America - and by now the first of four children has been born on the road, in the United States, and the trip has stopped having an end date.

   Fairbanks

   Alaska in 2003, three years and forty thousand kilometres later - and they did not stop. The Zapps kept going for twenty-two years and something over three hundred thousand kilometres in the same car.
