Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Larry McMurtry · 1993 · overland

The Lonesome Dove sequel, and the bleakest book McMurtry wrote. An ageing Woodrow Call is hired by a railroad to hunt a nineteen-year-old bandit who shoots from further away than anyone can shoot back - and the West he spent his life clearing has no further use for him.

  1. 1
    Amarillo

The railroad hires Woodrow Call, now old and working as a bounty hunter, to stop a nineteen-year-old bandit robbing their trains with a German rifle and a telescopic sight - and hitting from further off than anyone can answer.

  2. 2
    Crow Town

A west Texas outlaw settlement with nothing in it but a well and people nobody else will have - where Call picks up the trail, and where Joey Garza has been leaving bodies without particularly needing to.

  3. 3
    Laredo

The border, and the country Call has policed since he was nineteen - now with a railroad through it, a telegraph, and a young killer who has none of the code the old men fought by and does not miss it.

  4. 4
    Ojinaga

Maria Garza's town across the river from Presidio - the mother of the boy Call is hunting, who has her own account with the Texas Rangers and no reason on earth to help him.

  5. 5
    Crow Town

The end of it, and McMurtry's argument with his own most famous book: Call maimed, Pea Eye and Lorena carrying what is left, and a West in which the man who tamed it has become an embarrassment to the people who paid him.
