Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Hammond Innes · 1948 · survival

Hammond Innes's 1948 adventure. A metallurgist vanishes in Norway after cabling that he has found a great deposit of thorite, and the industrialist Bill Gansert sails north to learn what became of him. The search leads from Bergen up the fjords to the ice of the Jostedal, where a dead man's route has to be walked again to find what he died for.

  1. 1
    Newcastle

Bill Gansert takes a yacht out of the Tyne and points her across the North Sea, hunting a missing metallurgist named Farnell who cabled word of a great mineral strike in Norway and then went silent altogether.

  2. 2
    Bergen

At Bergen the trail turns cold and dangerous at once: Farnell is reported dead on the mountains, several people want the location of his discovery, and one of them has been to the fjords ahead of Gansert.

  3. 3
    Fjaerland

Up the Sognefjord to Fjaerland, where the glacier comes down almost to the water, Gansert picks up the last stage of the dead man's journey and starts to climb into the ice country behind the village.

  4. 4
    Alesund

Over the Jostedal ice and down the far side toward Alesund, the chase closes - two parties on the same route, in country where a storm or a crevasse settles arguments more finally than any of them intend.
