Roland Smith's 1999 novel retells the Lewis and Clark expedition through the eyes of Seaman, the Newfoundland dog who accompanied Captain Lewis. From 1804 to 1806 the Corps of Discovery pushed up the Missouri River, over the Rocky Mountains, and down the Columbia to the Pacific and back, the first Americans to cross the continent, mapping a route to the western ocean.
