Farley Mowat · 1966 · survival
The sequel to Lost in the Barrens. Angus Macnair falls ill and is flown out, leaving four young people with no money - so they go back for the Viking relics in the stone grave and carry them six hundred miles east to Hudson Bay, down a river road known only in the folklore of the northern tribes and not run in generations.
- 1Macnair Lake
Angus Macnair's cabin, where he teaches Jamie, Awasin and Peetyuk out of books by the stove - and is reading them the Norse voyages to America when Peetyuk mentions the stone house the boys found in the Barrens.
- 2Kasmere Lake
Angus falls ill and is flown out to hospital, leaving three boys and Awasin's sister Angeline with no money - so they set off to sell the Viking relics from the grave, which is the only asset they have.
- 3The Stone House
The cairn on the tundra and the cache inside it - a Norse burial in the Canadian Barrens, which is Mowat's own contested theory dramatised for children a decade before he argued it in print.
- 4The Kazan
North and east into Ihalmiut country, and Peetyuk's people - the Inuit of the inland Barrens, whom Mowat had lived among and written about in People of the Deer four years earlier.
- 5Big River
The river road down to the coast, known only in the folklore of the northern tribes and not used in generations - which is what the requester meant: the whole second half is one river, running east.
- 6Churchill
The Hudson Bay port and the end of the road, with the relics delivered and Angus provided for - and four young people who have come six hundred miles down a river nobody had run in living memory.
