Michael Cimino's 1978 film. Three steelworkers from a Pennsylvania mill town go deer hunting in the mountains, attend a wedding, and go to Vietnam. What happens to them in a riverside prison camp breaks all three in different ways - and years later one of them goes back to a collapsing Saigon to bring the last of them home.
- 1Clairton
In the steel town of Clairton on the Monongahela, Michael, Nick and Steven work the mill, drink, marry and hunt deer in the mountains above the valley - a last long weekend before all three of them ship out to Vietnam.
- 2The Mekong
Captured and held in a cage under a river hut, the three are made to play Russian roulette for their guards' amusement - and the escape downriver leaves each of them carrying something out of the water that will not be put down.
- 3Saigon
Michael returns years later to a Saigon on the point of falling, hunting through the back rooms and gambling dens of the city for Nick, who never came home and who has been playing the same game every night since.
- 4Clairton
Home again in Clairton, the survivors gather after the funeral in the room over the bar - and find themselves, without quite meaning to, singing God Bless America over the breakfast table.
