Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Clint Eastwood · 1975 · survival

Clint Eastwood's 1975 thriller, shot on the mountain itself. An art professor who used to kill for a government agency is brought back for one more job: the target is on a climbing team about to attempt the north face of the Eiger, and nobody knows which of them it is. He trains in the Arizona desert and goes to Switzerland to find out on the wall.

  1. 1
    Zurich

Hemlock is recalled by the agency he thought he had left, and briefed in Europe on a target he cannot identify - one of the men on an international team about to attempt the Eiger's north face, and no more information than that.

  2. 2
    Monument Valley

He goes to the Arizona desert to get fit under an old climbing partner, running dunes and working the sandstone towers - and discovers on Totem Pole that his instructor has reasons of his own for wanting him on that mountain.

  3. 3
    Kleine Scheidegg

At the hotel below the face, where tourists watch climbers die through coin-operated telescopes, the four-man team assembles and Hemlock studies three strangers, one of whom he is being paid to kill.

  4. 4
    The Eiger

On the north face the weather closes and the mountain settles the matter without him - and the sanction is completed, if that is the word, by a rope cut in a storm on the most notorious wall in the Alps.
