Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

M. M. Kaye · 1978 · overland

M. M. Kaye's 1978 epic of British India. Orphaned and raised as a Hindu, Ashton Pelham-Martyn grows up between two worlds, becomes an officer in the British army, and loves an Indian princess he escorts across the subcontinent to her wedding in Rajputana. His path leads north to the disastrous 1879 mission to Kabul, through the passes and politics of the Second Afghan War.
