   Off the Carolinas the American ships lie waiting; in a faked reactor accident the crew is taken off, and Jack Ryan boards to confirm Ramius means to defect.

   Pamlico Sound (Ocracoke)

   Under a moonless sky the Red October slips through Ocracoke Inlet to lie hidden in Pamlico Sound, while Moscow is told she was lost to a reactor meltdown.

   Norfolk, Virginia

   Ambushed on the run north, Ramius rams and sinks the pursuing Konovalov, then brings the Red October at last into the dry dock at Norfolk.
