Frans G. Bengtsson's high-spirited Viking saga, published in Sweden in 1941 and 1945. Red Orm, a canny, lucky son of Scania, is carried off to sea as a youth and swept across the tenth-century world: a galley slave and then a warrior for the Caliph of Cordoba, a guest at King Harald Bluetooth's Yule feast, a raider in Ethelred's England, and at last the captain of one final voyage east up the Russian rivers, to dig a hidden hoard of Bulgar gold from the banks of the Dnieper.
