Francis Lawrence's 2025 adaptation of the first novel Stephen King wrote - begun in 1966 as a college freshman, but not published until 1979, under the Richard Bachman name. Fifty teenage boys begin an annual walking contest at the Canada-Maine border and head south down U.S. Route 1; any who fall below pace are warned, then shot, and only the last one walking survives.

   Fifty boys, one from each state, gather at the Maine-Canada border and set off south down U.S. Route 1 in the annual televised death march.

   Bangor

   Keep above the pace or take a warning; three warnings and you are shot. Through the Maine towns they grind, the field thinning behind them.

   Past the state capital the survivors walk on without rest, friendships forming even as the boys drop one by one.

   Three hundred miles on, near the southern border, the Walk comes down to its last two, and its hollow prize.
