Kate DiCamillo's 2006 fable. Edward Tulane is a vain china rabbit, adored by a girl named Abilene in the house on Egypt Street. On an ocean voyage aboard the Queen Mary he is knocked overboard and sinks to the seabed, beginning a long passage through many hands, from a fisherman's cottage to a hobo's rail-side camp to the streets of Memphis, learning at last how to love. Its geography is deliberately dreamlike; this route traces the arc of Edward's wanderings.

   Egypt Street

   In the house on Egypt Street, the china rabbit Edward Tulane lives a pampered, self-satisfied life until the day his family carry him aboard the Queen Mary, bound across the sea.

   The Ocean

   Knocked overboard by careless boys, Edward sinks to the bottom of the ocean, where he lies for nearly three hundred days and feels, for the first time, afraid.

   A fisherman's net hauls him up to a little seaside cottage, the first of the many homes and hands that will pass him along.

   Carried at last by the railroads across the country to the streets of Memphis, the broken, much-loved rabbit learns to lose and to love again.
