Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Wolfgang Petersen · 2000 · sea

Wolfgang Petersen's 2000 film, from Sebastian Junger's account of a true event. The swordfishing boat Andrea Gail sails from Gloucester, Massachusetts, far out to the Grand Banks and the Flemish Cap in search of a last big catch. On the way home the crew is caught between three weather systems merging into a monstrous 'perfect storm,' battling forty-foot seas in a fight for survival against the North Atlantic.

  1. 1
    Gloucester

The Massachusetts fishing port from which Captain Billy Tyne and the crew of the Andrea Gail set out, chasing a swordfish catch big enough to turn around a bad season.

  2. 2
    The Grand Banks

The rich fishing grounds off Newfoundland where the boat fills its hold, then pushes further east to the Flemish Cap when the fish stop biting - too far out when the weather turns.

  3. 3
    The perfect storm

The stretch of open Atlantic where three storm systems collide into a monster, and the Andrea Gail, running for home, is swallowed by seas no boat could survive.
