In 1959 the Baptist preacher Nathan Price drags his wife and four daughters from small-town Georgia to a mission in the Belgian Congo, on the eve of the country's violent independence. In the remote village of Kilanga on the Kwilu River, his rigid faith collides with Africa and breaks his family apart, scattering the surviving Price women across the continent and the decades.
