Graham Greene · 1940 · exile
Graham Greene's 1940 novel. In a Mexican state that has outlawed the Church and shoots its priests, a flawed 'whisky priest' flees the authorities through the jungles and villages of Tabasco and Chiapas - from Frontera toward the border - torn between fear and faith, hunted by a zealous lieutenant, toward a martyrdom he feels unworthy to receive.
- 1Frontera
The Grijalva port where the dentist Mr Tench lives; meaning to board a ship for Veracruz, the priest turns back to tend a dying woman and misses his one escape.
- 2Concepcion
The priest's old parish, home to his lover Maria and their daughter Brigitta; he says a dawn mass just as the police ride in, and a villager is later taken hostage and shot.
- 3Las Casas
Across the border in Chiapas, where the Church is tolerated, the priest shelters with the Lehrs and plans to reach San Cristobal and safety.
- 4Tabasco-Chiapas Border
Lured back over the border by the mestizo to confess a dying American outlaw, the priest walks knowingly into a trap and is taken by the lieutenant.
- 5Villahermosa
The state capital and seat of the police, where the priest is carried back, refused a last confession, and shot against the wall.
