Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

John Hillcoat · 2005 · overland

John Hillcoat's 2005 outback Western, written by Nick Cave. In 1880s colonial Australia, Captain Stanley captures the outlaw Charlie Burns and makes him a terrible offer: ride out into the searing wilderness, find and kill his own older brother Arthur, and his younger brother will be spared the gallows. Charlie's journey into the ochre hills becomes a reckoning with blood, loyalty and the brutality of the frontier.
