Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Robert Wise · 1965 · exile

Robert Wise's 1965 musical. A novice sent out from Nonnberg Abbey to govern the seven children of a widowed naval captain turns his silent house upside down - and then the Anschluss arrives. The family sing their way through the Salzburg festival and slip out of the hall while the audience is still applauding, climbing into the mountains rather than serve the Reich.

  1. 1
    Nonnberg Abbey

High above Salzburg at Nonnberg Abbey, the sisters despair of a postulant who sings on the mountainside and is late for everything - and the Reverend Mother sends Maria out as governess to a captain's seven children.

  2. 2
    Leopoldskron

At the lakeside villa she finds a household run by boatswain's whistle, and dismantles it with curtains made into play clothes and songs on the stairs - until the captain hears his children singing and begins to thaw.

  3. 3
    The Felsenreitschule

With Austria annexed and a commission waiting for the captain, the family use the Salzburg festival as cover - singing to a hall of uniforms, then slipping away a verse at a time while the audience applauds.

  4. 4
    The Untersberg

Hidden in the abbey graveyard while the search goes past, they take to the mountains on foot and climb out over the Untersberg - the film's route toward Switzerland, though the real von Trapps simply took a train to Italy.
