Genesis 37 to 50. A favourite son with a coat is sold by his brothers to a passing caravan and taken down into Egypt, where he goes from slave to prisoner to the man running the country - and the family that sold him eventually turns up at his door asking for grain.

   Dothan

   The brothers see the coat coming across the field and put him in a pit, and then sell him to Ishmaelites going down to Egypt for twenty pieces of silver - and take the coat home covered in goat's blood.

   Egypt

   Sold to Potiphar, imprisoned on his wife's word, and forgotten in a cell for two years by a man he helped - and then brought up to interpret two dreams about cattle and corn, and made second in the kingdom.

   Goshen

   Famine drives the brothers down to buy grain, and they do not recognise the Egyptian official who keeps leaving the room to weep - and the whole family, seventy people, is settled in the best of the land.

4. 4
   Canaan

   Jacob makes him swear to carry him out of Egypt, and the funeral procession goes back up with chariots and horsemen to the cave at Machpelah - and Joseph's own bones wait four hundred years for the Exodus.
