Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Desmond Bagley · 1973 · thriller

Desmond Bagley's 1973 thriller. Giles Denison goes to sleep in London and wakes in an Oslo hotel wearing another man's face. Before he can work out what has been done to him, he is being followed, shot at and courted by people who take him for a scientist he has never heard of - and to survive he must go on playing the part, all the way to Finnish Lapland.

  1. 1
    Oslo

Giles Denison wakes in an Oslo hotel with a stranger's face in the mirror and a stranger's papers in the drawer - remade, without memory or explanation, into a scientist named Meyrick whose enemies are closing in.

  2. 2
    Bergen

Forced to keep up the impersonation, Denison follows the dead man's itinerary west toward Bergen, hunted by two intelligence services who each want what Meyrick knew, and improvising a life he has had no time to learn.

  3. 3
    Ivalo

The trail runs far north into Finnish Lapland, to Ivalo and the last roads before the wilderness, where the real object of everyone's interest lies waiting somewhere in country of birch scrub, water and endless summer light.

  4. 4
    Kevo

In the Kevo wilds, the pursuers converge at last on what Meyrick hid - and Denison, still wearing another man's face, has to finish another man's business before either side can finish him.
