H. G. Wells's 1895 novella, which invented the phrase. A man demonstrates a model to his dinner guests in a Richmond drawing room, disappears for a week, and comes back filthy and starving with a story about the year 802,701 - and then goes out again with a camera and does not return.

   The Time Traveller's house on the hill, and the Thursday dinners at which he explains that time is a fourth dimension and then sends a model machine into nowhere in front of a doctor, an editor and a psychologist.
