Rachel Joyce's 2012 novel. Harold Fry, newly retired and quietly adrift in south Devon, walks to the postbox to send a letter to Queenie Hennessy, an old colleague dying in a hospice at the far end of England. Instead of posting it he keeps walking, seized by a conviction that as long as he keeps going she will stay alive, and so begins an unplanned 627-mile pilgrimage in yachting shoes from one corner of England to the other.
