Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

John Christopher · 1967 · overland

John Christopher's 1967 science-fiction quest. In a future where alien Tripods rule and 'Cap' every human mind at fourteen, young Will flees his English village before the ceremony and treks south with two companions - across the Channel and a ruined Paris - toward a rumored stronghold of free men in the White Mountains of the Alps, pursued the whole way by the machines.

  1. 1
    Wherton (southern England)

Will and his cousin Henry flee their village rather than be 'Capped' into obedience at fourteen.

  2. 2
    The French coast

They cross the Channel by boat and, in France, fall in with the resourceful Beanpole.

  3. 3
    Paris (the ruined city)

A vast dead city of a fallen iron tower and a buried railway - unmistakably old Paris.

  4. 4
    The Château

Will recovers from injury among a faded French family, and loses Eloise to the Tripods.

  5. 5
    The White Mountains (the Alps)

Snow-capped peaks - Mont Blanc and the Alps - sheltering the tunnels of the free men.
