Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world

Sam Peckinpah · 1969 · overland

Sam Peckinpah's 1969 western. A gang of ageing outlaws walks into a railroad ambush at Starbuck, shoots its way out through a temperance parade and runs for Mexico with bags of steel washers. There is nowhere left for them to be: the frontier has closed, the motor car has arrived, and the only work on offer is stealing guns for a Mexican general.

  1. 1
    Starbuck

Dressed as soldiers, Pike Bishop's men ride into Starbuck to rob the railroad office and find bounty hunters on the roofs - and shoot their way out through a temperance march, leaving the street full of dead civilians.

  2. 2
    The Rio Grande

They cross into Mexico with the posse behind them and the loot turning out to be washers - a country with a revolution on, federal troops looting villages, and old men discovering how little they have left to sell.

  3. 3
    Agua Verde

At Agua Verde they take a contract from General Mapache to steal a US Army arms shipment - and when he tortures one of their own to death, four men walk back through the town to get him, knowing exactly how it ends.
